Shiro Tsujimura

January 20, 2025 –

THE GALLERY by Odo is honored to announce Shiro Tsujimura: Ceramic and Paintings, a major solo exhibition exploring the profound artistic range of one of Japan’s most influential contemporary artists. Opening January 20, 2026, this showcase presents a dialogue between Tsujimura’s internationally acclaimed ceramics and his evocative, gestural paintings, offering a rare glimpse into the artist's holistic creative philosophy.

Tsujimura’s practice is defined by a fierce independence and a raw, unforced aesthetic. Forgoing traditional apprenticeships, he has spent decades honing a self-taught mastery that bridges the gap between historical craft and modern expression. The exhibition features a curated selection of works documented in the "Summary Shiro Tsujimura: Ceramic and Paintings" and provides visitors with deep contextual insights through our latest publication, "The Gallery Times 2026".

From the tactile, earth-bound energy of his vessels to the spiritual spontaneity of his ink and brushwork, this exhibition captures the essence of an artist who views the act of creation as a direct extension of nature.

About Shiro Tsujimura

Born in 1947 in Nara Prefecture, Japan. After training at a Soto Zen temple and working in his family’s livestock farming, he began making ceramics independently in the late 1960s. In 1970, he built his home and first kiln by hand in the mountains of Mizuma, Nara, where he continues to live and work today, eventually constructing a total of seven kilns.

Since his first solo exhibition in 1977, Tsujimura has held numerous exhibitions in Japan and internationally, including in New York, London, Paris, Venice, Antwerp, Berlin, and Frankfurt. His works are held in major collections, including the Cleveland Museum of Art. He has exhibited at institutions such as the Urasenke Tea Ceremony Museum and participated in major exhibitions including Artempo at Palazzo Fortuny, Venice.

Tsujimura is widely regarded as one of the most influential contemporary ceramic artists in Japan, known for his uncompromising lifestyle, deep connection to nature, and relentless pursuit of creation.
